Chocolate Treats For Lactose Intolerant Kids

Chocolate is one of childhood’s most treasured treats. So what about children who are unable to eat regular chocolate due to a food intolerance?

Luckily, there’s a wide range of dairy free chocolate available these days, both in health food stores and occasionally in mainstream supermarkets.

Times can still be hard for children with a dairy intolerance, though, particularly when they’re watching their friends munching on choc-chip muffins and cakes in the playground.

Parents can make life just a little more enjoyable for their dairy-free kids by using dairy free chocolate and chocolate powders to create more complex treats:

Choc-Chip Biscuits – These treats couldn’t be simpler to create at home by using chunks of dairy free chocolate. Simply take a regular biscuit recipe and use margarine instead of butter.

Chocolate Cake – As cocoa is free from dairy, a cocoa-based chocolate cake recipe is easy to make dairy free by substituting margarine for butter and soy for dairy milk. For a richer, denser cake and sweeter result, add mashed banana.

Chocolate Pudding – Puddings are slightly more complex to make dairy free, but an easy chocolate pudding can be made with dairy free cooking chocolate and soy milk. Take a tablespoon of cornstarch and a quarter cup of sugar and dissolve in a saucepan by gradually adding one cup of soy milk over a low heat. When the mixture is warm and beginning to thicken, add two ounces of melted dairy free cooking chocolate and a teaspoon of vanilla extract, then allow to cool.
